Easy Online Games For Kids

Although I've covered Preschool games in the past, I'm revisiting the topic because it continues to be one of my most requested subjects. But this collection of games is not only for preschoolers; each site also includes fun stuff for early elementary ages. Find out more at the following websites.

Kids Game

Billy Bear's Online games

Kids Game

Billy Bear has a large collection of games for preschoolers and early elementary grades created with Java and JavaScript. This means you don't need to download any plug-ins, but you do need a newish browser. Be sure to have both Java and JavaScript enabled in your browser preferences or options. Some of these games are very cute. Others are just ho-hum. My personal favorite is the addictive Billy Bear Solitaire: the aim of the game is to delete as many bears as possible by jumping checkers-style.

Funschool.com

From preschool to sixth grade, Funschool.com is a cornucopia of grade-specific activities. All are Java-based, so have the same browser requirements as Billy Bear (see above). At the bottom of each activity screen are buttons to play another scenario of the same game, to restart the current game, or return to the grade-level game listings. Learning these will help you get around. My favorite preschool game is Fishing for Numbers, where the player matches numbers to sets of fish. For older kids game "Where in the world?"

Seussville Games

"Here's lots of games for you to play, to keep you entertained all day." From the Cat's Concentration game to Green Eggs and Ham picture scramble, Dr. Seuss fans will find plenty to crow about. My don't-miss-it pick of the day is the Shockwave "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!" game. It is based on the newest Seuss book, written by Jack Prelutsky, inspired by work Dr. Seuss left incomplete at the time of death in 1991.

Family Feud - A Fun Game For Children Too

I was asked by Camp Med, a licensed day care program and summer camp sponsored by the City of South Pasadena, to give a presentation to our campers about the upcoming Summer Olympics, as I would be leaving for Beijing shortly to work on the games. I thought if I just talk and the kids just listen, it could get kind of boring. So instead, I proposed an Olympic Family Feud.

Kids Game

The campers were divided into 4 groups. The winning group would each receive a prize. The way it worked is that I would ask a question and give one specific group a chance to respond. Unlike television Family Feud where only one person can participate, here anyone from the group could chip in. The team leader would then try to write down the best answer. If the answer was wrong, the question would move to the next group. If one group was noticeably weaker, they would get the easier questions.

Kids Game

What struck me is how engaged the kids got. You could see the wheels turning. They started thinking. They wanted to give the right answer. They wanted to win. They were having fun and so were the other counselors.

The questions asked required different skills, memory, reasoning and also listening (to what I had talked about throughout the summer). Due to the internet, it was very easy to come up with questions as multiple trivia, kids and information sites exist.

When I returned from the Olympics, the kids were very interested about my experience. It was as if the Olympic Family Feud had opened the door for them to be aware and interested in the Olympics. The event was such a success that we are following it up with a Halloween Family Feud. For Halloween Family Feud, more jokes and questions with an element of levity will be included. The Kids TV Shows of the 80s and 90s

I can remember in the 80s and most of the 90s TV been the most important thing in my life. I would get home from school and I would watch Rainbow and He man. Then I would change the channel to the BBC and see what was on there. The Kids TV Shows they were so good back then, and hardly ever was there one that you did not like. Nowadays I wonder if the kids born in the 2000s would feel like me when they grow up. Would they want to see the old kids TV shows from their childhood when they have grown up? I very much doubt it. Now it is all about putting people in costumes and singing and dancing around. There just doesn't seem to be any creativity in many of the Kids TV Shows today. It is "let us sing a song about the alphabet" etc and that is good enough.

Pbs Kids

The only program I can remember been really good at this was Sesame street. This had great characters with humour and learning at the same time. I just cant say the same for Teletubbies and the Tweenies just to name a few of these shows. Can you see a kid later in their mid to late 20s wanting to see these shows again? I can't. However, when I was watching Kids TV in the late 80s and most of the 90s, there were shows back then what you could not wait to come back on again. Knightmare - it looks so crappy now, but for its time it was genius. I mean you would actually join in and go "no don't send him that way you idiots." A lot of the shows had interactivity or great story lines like The Mysterious cities of Gold. How many shows nowadays in the Kids TV area have half of what these shows had back then? Perhaps I am biased towards the era I grew up in. Maybe not. I don't know it is just that I can't see the Kids TV Shows what come on now. Will they be remembered like the shows come and gone in the 80s and 90s? Perhaps a few will but I think not many.

LEGO Universe - Cool Kids Games

LEGO Universe is a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) that was launched in October 2010 by Warner Brothers. Although the game is rated for players age 10 and up, it also appeals to adults who are gamers and who have grown up with LEGO. Players are able to play in two different worlds for free, though universal access to all features requires a monthly subscription. Players download the game from the LEGO Universe website and then access the game on secure servers. The game is available in English and German.

Kids Game

The popularity of LEGO extends back to 1949 when the interlocking plastic bricks were first produced in Denmark. Since that time, the company has expanded into books, games, amusement parks, robotics and video games. The attraction to LEGO is its simplistic block-by-block designs whereby children (and adults) can build anything they desire. The creation of LEGO Universe is not only an additional branch of LEGO - it is a marketing tool to further establish the LEGO brand.

Kids Game

About the Virtual World

In LEGO Universe, players take the role of LEGO minifigures in an age-old battle of good versus evil in an alternate universe. A maelstrom is the center of the dark energy that threatens the universe. Players split up into teams (or factions) to try and destroy the maelstrom and a beast called a Spider Queen in various worlds. Players collect battle gear on their journey to help them fight their foes. Players also collect LEGO bricks along the way to build models on their personal property. Properties are like a home base where the player is safe and is able to allow fellow players access to their property.

What's Good

LEGO Universe is an action-oriented game that will appeal mainly to tween boys and older teens who are fascinated with futuristic worlds and fantasy. The graphics and overall design of the game are top-notch. With LEGO and Warner Brothers partnering on this project, you would expect nothing but rich colors, detailed images and a solid platform. Parents can be reassured that there are no adult themes in the game. There is no drinking, smoking, drug use, sex or offensive language. Words that are not found in the dictionary will not be shown.

LEGO Universe offers an easy-to-navigate website for parents to find out information about the game, registration, online safety and customer service. Players can easily connect with fellow players in an online community, share game plans and become friends anonymously. The LEGO brand is heavily promoted through the website and not through the game. Although tokens cannot be accumulated to buy LEGO merchandise, players can easily browse the entire LEGO catalogue online to purchase LEGO products.

What's Bad

Violence may be an issue with some parents. Although there is no blood or gore that can be associated with adult video games, players are involved in an intense battle of good versus evil that may be a bit extreme for younger players. Swords, knives, hammers and laser guns are used as weapons. Although the players are only made of LEGO, characters do get smashed, broken and die. The facial expressions on most of the evil characters can be quite obtuse and unsettling for younger players.

Parents may see an increase of requests for LEGO products just because the LEGO brand is associated with the game. Younger players may find the storyline complicated, but their familiarity with online gaming should ease them into the story. Some themes may be too intense for younger players. Parents should browse the game with younger players and discuss these themes.

LEGO has traditionally been a popular children's toy that has succeeded because of high quality and standards. LEGO has done an excellent job of promoting online safety and has provided parents with many tools to share concerns about safety or design issues with LEGO Universe. LEGO's online safety message is prominently displayed and spelled out in easy-to-understand language. A moderator is a prominent role within the game and in online chatting to ensure a child's safety.

Players and parents should be aware that the game is scheduled to be shut down at the end of January 2012. Though the game is based on the popular LEGO blocks, the company is disappointed with the game's online presence and has decided to shut LEGO Universe down. Players with existing paid memberships will enjoy one free month of play in January. Refunds for any unused credit will be paid back to the credit card holder beginning February 1, 2012.

Most of the reviews on this site are good. Parents especially like that PBS allows preschoolers to watch an entire range of their favorite shows such as Barney, Sesame Street and Teletubbies. Keep in mind however, that while they have some math and reading skill development for slightly older children this site is primarily designed for toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary. This is not a bad thing it is just something that parents should be aware of.

Most parents do recommend that parents look over the site before presenting it to their child as there are some plugins that are necessary for your child to be able to fully use the site and parents may want to make sure the entire site is up and running before their child begins to use the site on a regular basis.

PBS Kids Games - Frequently Asked Questions

Games - Should Kids Play War Games?

If you grew up in the early to late 60s you remember watching Vic Morrow in the great series Combat. You were so taken by the his performance that if you were a normal kid, you wanted to be Sergeant Saunders. And you got the chance to do it too. The toy stores were stocked to the rafters with Saunders trademarked camouflaged helmet, Thompson Sub Machine Gun and hand grenades. The gun had a pull back knob that was quite realistic and the gun made quite a racket when it was shot. The grenades were equipped with the old style cap explosives that also made quite a bang when the grenade hit the ground correctly.

Kids Game

Taking your equipment, you and your friends made off for the nearest woods or mazed area. You took turns hunting each other down. Because nobody really got shot, you were pretty much on the honor system when someone snuck up behind you, started shooting and said, "you're dead". You were always tempted to say, "I'm just wounded" and walk off to the aid station for a brief timeout until you were "healed" and ready to get back in the game. Nobody really died and the games went on forever until you simply got tired of playing or your mother called you in for dinner. It was all pretty harmless fun.

Kids Game

But, it's 40 years later and parents are wondering if they should let their kids play war games. They're afraid that if their kids play with guns they will grow up to play with real guns. We have become so politically correct that it has gotten to the point where you can't even find guns in a toy store anymore. Those days are long gone. So if a kid wants to play army, he better have a very good imagination.

The question is, is this right? Certainly not every kid who played with guns grew up to become a killer. An associate of mine had not only a Saunders Tommy Gun, but also a German Luger, an M1 rifle, a Colt 45 and quite a few hand grenades. He says he had to have several when attacking those German bunkers. Today, this kid who lived to play army, is a successful Internet marketer and has never held a real gun a day in his life.

The truth is, it doesn't take a toy gun to turn a kid bad. If somebody is destined to turn to a life of crime, he's going to do it with or without having played with toy guns. So the question of whether or not kids should be allowed to play war games is one that has to be answered by each individual parent. Parents should make informed decisions about everything they allow or don't allow their children to do. There is an old saying that says guns don't kill, people kill. That was true in the 1960s and it is true today as well.

Certainly toy guns don't kill anybody.

Top 7 Natural Wonders in the U.S.A.

The following is my list of the top seven natural wonders of the U.S.A. Although I have yet to visit any - these are the top seven I want to visit.

Pbs Kids

Number One:

Pbs Kids

Niagara Falls. Three large waterfalls falling 61 meters with large amounts of water pouring over. A must see. The power of the water, the sound, the mist, the boat ride, the romance.

Number Two:

The Grand Canyon. Whether you believe it took millions of years or whether you believe its an obvious result of a great flood, its become irrelevant when you see the scale. The facts and figures as well as the photos look impressive. I'm sure in the flesh words do it no justice.

Number Three:

Yosemite National Park. The View of El Capitan the worlds largest piece of exposed granite alone would be worth the visit. The rivers, streams and animals just add to the beauty.

Number Four:

Redwood National Park. Having seen the beautiful Redwoods in Rotorua, New Zealand which are just over 100 years old, how much better to see ones over a thousand. The size and beauty of these trees is only bettered by having them all in one place creating the perfect cool environment with lots of fresh air. Living up to 2000 years old and reaching 105 meters in height is all impressive, but it is their width that really inspires.

Number Five:

Yellowstone National Park. I love Geothermal Wonders and Yellowstone has plenty over 10,000 hot springs and geysers. Throw in trees and a swim in hot pools and I'm in heaven. Seeing Bison in their natural setting would also be a reminder of America's past. Watching a bear - from a very safe distance - would also be a treat.

Number Six:

The Black Hills country. OK, you've got me here, Mount Rushmore is hardly natural, but still worth a visit. The fact that Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Deadwood are all nearby gives a taste of the great plains and the wild west.

Number Seven:

Hawaii - the Volcanoes, Wailua Falls, the beaches, the towering cliffs, waterfalls and forests - all good reasons to visit.

Some will complain I haven't include Alaska in this list, but to be honest Alaska would make a list all on its own.

Pass the questions around and let every one take one. Each person gets a turn to read their question, then take an "answer" from the second bowl and sing it if they know the song. Some really hilarious answers to questions come out! And strange versions to songs too.

Your Family is an Organization

It is good to remember a family is an organization. In fact, it is the basic organization of society. This is just one of the reasons I am such a proponent of family meetings. You wouldn't think of running a successful business without a plan, goal setting meetings, team building sessions and clear missions and expectations. As such, everyone in the family should have an equivalent of a job description. Each person's job description helps him define his roles and responsibilities in the family.

Pbs Kids

Just like in the workplace, the clearer the job description and the more input is solicited from the participant, the more ownership is established. If you have ever worked in a workplace where no one knew what their job was day to day and rules were arbitrary, you will recall how chaotic and frustrating it was for everyone.

Pbs Kids

The following information on structuring a family council has been compiled in part from information contained in The Parent's Handbook by Dinkmeyer & McKay, as well twenty five years of personal experience.

WHAT IS A FAMILY COUNCIL?

A family council is a regularly scheduled meeting of all family members. Its purpose is to make plans and decisions, to provide encouragement, and to solve problems. It is very much like a team building or staff meeting held in the workplace. Plans and decisions made during a family meeting remain in effect until the next meeting.

FAMILY MEETINGS PROVIDE OPPORTUNITES TO:

o Be heard

o Convey positive feelings about one another

o Give encouragement

o Distribute chores fairly

o Set goals for the family unit and assist in personal goals

o Express concerns, feelings, and complaints

o Settle conflicts and dealing with recurring problems

o Plan family recreation

o Have fun

GUIDELINES FOR EFFECTIVE FAMILY MEETINGS;

o Establish a specific weekly meeting time.

o Rotate chairperson and secretary.

o Establish and stick to time limits.

o Make sure all members have a chance to offer ideas.

o Encourage everyone to bring up issues.

o Don't permit meetings to become gripe sessions.

o Distribute chores fairly.

o Plan family fun.

o Use your communication skills. Use "I" statements

o Evaluate the meeting.

o Maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect and honesty.

A TYPICAL AGENDA FOR FAMILY MEETINGS

o Share positive feelings about good things that have happened during the week.

o Read and discuss the minutes from the previous meeting.

o Discuss old business. Evaluate how assignments went for the week.

o Bring up new business (focusing on family fun as well as on plans and problems).

o Summarize and evaluate the meeting.

Agreements as well as logical consequences for not following through with assignments should be discussed and agreed upon by the family. All members should be encouraged to participate in family meetings as equals. Family meetings are essential if families want to build strong relationships.

Good luck and God bless. You do the most important work in the world.

Kids' Games

There are thousands of kids game and console sales continue to increase, with an amazing 57% growth over the previous year in the USA alone, according to the research company NPD. Some of this growth is related to the new video consoles, many of which appeal to younger children. Touch screens and interactive menus make video game play possible for preschoolers, with games featuring favorite characters add to the attraction. With so many consoles to choose from, many families are multi console owners, with different consoles appealing to different age groups and tastes in games.

Kids Game

But what does this mean for more traditional kids games?
Board games have been around for thousands of years, with the earliest board games dated around 3500BC. Most of the board games you find in the shops are variations on a classic theme, although you do find some original twists.

Kids Game

Classic kids games are still popular, but consumer trends are dictating a need for more modern versions. According to an article by Michelle R. Smith, Associated Press Writer, families are busier than ever, and often don't have time to play the traditional board games. In contrast, kids are getting used to picking up games consoles and playing their games in short bursts. In response, companies such as Hasbro, who make favorites such as Scrabble, Monopoly and The Game of Life, are adapting to the needs of their customers by coming up with versions of their games that can be played within 20 minutes. The advantage of these games, is that they open the game up for direct interaction with family and friends, as opposed to the usual solo play mode of video games.

Playground games are still being played, thank goodness. Kids still love hopscotch, jump rope (skipping), elastic games, even dodge ball. Despite protestations of many a parent, kids love rough and tumble, and medicine balls and bull dog games are still popular, especially amongst boys. Will this ever change? Probably not, most kids play these sort of games at some point or other, and live to tell the tale!

Party games are still as firm a favorite as ever. Kids games can make or break a party, but it isn't hard to plan a few fun party games to make your party a real hit. Classic games such as Musical Bumps, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, and Pass the Parcel will always be popular. Make sure that the games are played fairly as more tears can be caused at parties because someone feels that another guest has cheated, than any other reason. Prizes are expected, but these do not have to be elaborate. Kids enjoy the fun of the game and most are content with some yummy candy.

PBS Kids Games - Give Your Child a Good Educational Start

Every parent worries about whether or not their child is ready to meet the challenges of that first year in school. PBS kids games is an online site that has over 50 educational games to help your child get ready for the educational challenges that lay ahead and to even practice basic math and reading skills once they are in school. The PBS site has online games that teach basic reading and math readiness such as letter sounds and counting. Pbs Kids

While some of these games are free the majority can only be played by registering with PBS kids games. The fee is .00 per year but the site does offer a free trial period so you can determine whether or not the site is actually helpful to your child. Most parents should find the site easy to navigate and a great way for young children to practice counting and letter and word recognition. For children in school the ability to practice reading and math concepts will help a struggling child perfect these skills at a much more economical fee than a tutor would cost.

Pbs Kids

Just What Do You Get For Your Registration Fee?

The bottom line for most parents is knowing what they will get for their registration fee. The answer is quite a lot actually. Not only does your child get access to all 50 educational games, but also, there are also many arcade type games that you and your child can play together. You also get a series of PBS television episodes for kids that will further allow them to learn about a variety of topics, there are down loadable coloring pages as well.

To round everything off and make this site more useful for parents, PBS kids games have developed a way to follow their children's progress so that you can see which areas your child may need further development in and which areas they excel in so that you can help direct them in their learning. Best of all because these activities are done on the computer, there will be less stress between you and your child and your child gets instant feedback so they know what they did wrong and can learn to correct it.

PBS kids games are not meant to replace parental involvement in your child's education. It is simply a means to give parents one more tool to help their child learn and be more successful in school. If you are worried about your child being ready for school or if you have a young elementary child who is struggling with some of the basic skills, PBS kids games may be worth trying out for both you and your child.

Word Factory and Scrabble could further enhance the skills of children who have already learned how to spell and read. If you want a game that could really have the brain neurons running in lightning speed, then Chess will be a good choice. These educational games for kids could all be found in Toys R Us, as well as many other toy stores.

Kids Game

One more kids' miscellaneous game worth considering is playing catch. This is a very simple outdoor game that could actually help in stimulating the frontal lobe of the brain or the cerebrum. This part controls motor skills. Proper stimulation of the cerebrum could make kids more accurate and precise in their movements. Hand and feet coordination will also improve.
And, if your kid finds sports activities fun and exciting, you could always let him join sports activities. Remember that athletes use their brains a lot. Victory is not achieved by simply using the body but the brain plays an important role in winning a game of sports. Hence, any chance to improve your kids' brains should be grabbed. You can find the sports equipment you need from Toys R Us and also from sporting goods stores. The moment that you are able to introduce these educational games for kids, you will definitely notice the positive improvement in your kids.

BEST Websites for Kids

When I set out to find the best websites for kids I wanted to make sure that the sites had real educational value and were easy to use. I did not want any sites included that asked for any information, not even an email address. Websites that had too much advertising were avoided. And, finally, I wanted the sites to be free or very low cost.

Pbs Kids

I always advise parents to look at any sites before sharing them with your kids so that you know exactly what is on each site.

Pbs Kids

So with that in mind, here are my choices:

Starfall

Starfall is a website that helps children learn to read. It has everything from learning your ABCs to reading books. The graphics are colorful, attractive and simple to click on. The audio is clear and easy to understand. Best of all it is a jump and go site. No login and nothing to click through to get started. They also offer free printable worksheets to practice writing. And it is all FREE. Starfall can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. The site is listed for Kindergarten through second grade, but preschool kids enjoy learning their letters and struggling readers may enjoy it also.

PBS Kids

PBS Kids is a wonderful site that has lots of familiar characters that children love: Clifford the Big Red Dog, Arthur, Maya and Miguel, and Sesame Street, just to name a few. The pictures are bright and attractive and the audio is great. For older children, ZOOM is a favorite. They have games to play and free printable worksheets. PBS Kids is a jump and go website as well. No login and nothing to click through to get started.

One of the great things about PBS Kids is that some of the areas of the site are companions to the television shows seen on PBS. Between the Lions, Reading Rainbow, Maya and Miguel are all represented in the website. Once again, this site is FREE. PBS Kids is recommended for children preschool through elementary.

If this were not enough, they have great parenting pages!

The Literacy Center

This website is much smaller than the others; however, I like it because it is simple to navigate for preschoolers and kindergarteners. The have cute online games in English/Spanish/German/French for children learning colors, letters, numbers and shapes. This is a great place for ESL (English as a Second Language) to begin saying the words in English. Some children may enjoy learning the Spanish, German or French words for fun. The audio is very clear. This is also a jump and go site. And it is FREE.

Guys Read

Jon Scieczka, a famous children's author, created the Guys Read website in order to promote literacy for boys. It is an established fact that boys don't always take to reading willingly. I have seen this in my own classroom and there have been studies done on this very subject. So how can we encourage boys to read more? One of the ways is to provide boys with books and other reading materials that they enjoy. The Guys Read website was created to give guys (little guys and big guys) a place where they can find books that are interesting. There is also a forum called Readerville where they can talk with other guys about the books they are reading.

Scholastic, Inc.

You may be familiar with the name Scholastic. They are a publishing company that has been serving the educational community for years. They have Book fairs at schools, Book clubs and offer online lessons for a fee. But, lucky for us there are many free activities your child will enjoy. Scholastic is the home of the Magic School Bus and the famous Miss Frizzle! You will also find Clifford the Big Red Dog and other favorites. The younger children will need some help to navigate the website at first. There are plenty of activities to do and they have parent pages as well.

Clifford's Interactive Storybooks
This area of the Scholastic website is located within the teacher pages. Children can listen to the stories and practice reading. It's lots of fun!

National Zoo

The National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian Institution. The website is excellent. If you have a child that likes animals, you must visit this site. The site is jump and go, meaning you can start exploring immediately. Younger children will need help searching. The live animal cams are very popular! The photo gallery has excellent pictures as well. So much information is available you really need some time to explore and even then you will always find something new to discover on subsequent visits.

The San Diego Zoo also has a great website.

Enchanted Learning

This website is HUGE and covers everything from the Alphabet to Zoology. The information on this website (over 20,000 pages) is available to everyone for FREE. You can just view or view and printout the pages. This website does not offer interactive games; however, if I had to choose just one website to have available to my students it would be this one. I said students, rather than children for a reason. The information on this site is so extensive that even college students could use it for basic research. (I have.) I am not kidding. You have got to see this for yourself.

As I said, all of the information is free, but they do offer a membership. Members can print out all of the pages with no ads showing.

I cannot believe that so many people have never heard of Enchanted Learning. I would expect that a membership to this site would cost at least /year if not more, but no - and it's not or either. For just /year your entire family can benefit from this BEST Educational Website Ever! (and remember - if you don't want to become a member, you can still enjoy all of the benefits for free)

BookPALS Story Online

BookPALS is presented by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. Celebrities read children's books aloud. The site also features activities for kids. The audio is excellent and it has lots of great pictures. It is a jump and go site, but a speedy computer is needed, otherwise it can take a long time to load and the buffer won't take it without pauses.

abcteach

abcteach is the greatest! This is the favorite website of teachers. There are so many things you can print and use from coloring pages to reading comprehension practice. They also have a fabulous math section. The website has now introduced an area for middle school students. In order to be fully functional the membership fee is /year; however, over 5000 pages are available for free. In addition to the great reading activities at abcteach you can find flashcards, puzzles, mazes, clip art, report covers and so much more. This is a great place to find excellent printables. Parents will have to choose and print the activities for younger children.

Go surf for fun!
